The church of Saint George stands in Zemo Khvedureti, the parish church of a small village. In Georgian toponymy the word zemo means upper, and it almost always works as one half of a pair: where there is an upper Khvedureti, a lower village of the same name will be found nearby.
Such pairs formed in Shida Kartli over centuries as settlements moved up or down a river course, and they can be read as a history of how the valleys were settled. The village lies south of Kareli, away from the main highway: the road leaves the motorway and crosses the fields towards the foothills of the Trialeti range, which runs along the whole southern edge of the municipality.
The church is active and quiet, meant for the people of the village. It may keep no fixed schedule, so allow some flexibility. Dress with shoulders and knees covered; a headscarf is useful for women.
