π Where to Park a Truck Before the Georgian Border: TIR Parks and the E-Queue
π What a TIR park is and why it's mandatory
This isn't just a spot to rest. Before nine of Georgia's customs checkpoints, pulling into one of these lots is mandatory: from there, trucks get dispatched to the border through an electronic queue.

Every driver hauling freight through Georgia for the first time trips over the same thing. You approach the border, and instead of the checkpoint you get sent to a lot a few kilometres back. Not because the border's closed, but because that's the rule for everyone.
Here's where these lots actually are, how the queue works, what it costs, and what to expect on the busiest routes: Kazbegi before Upper Lars, Red Bridge, and Sarpi.
π Which Georgian borders require a TIR park

The rule is written into official policy. According to Georgia's Revenue Service, all freight vehicles, empty or loaded, heading to the Sarpi, Kazbegi, Red Bridge, Sadakhlo, Lagodekhi, Guguti, Ninotsminda, Vale, and Kartsakhi checkpoints must pull into the parking lot adjacent to that checkpoint before arriving at it. Those lots, in turn, have to meet the requirements of Government Resolution No. 442 dated 31 December 2013 and be connected to the electronic vehicle management system.
In plain terms, your truck doesn't head straight to customs. It goes to the TIR park first, and from there the system releases it toward the border in order.
Worth flagging clearly: running empty doesn't exempt you from the rule. Even with nothing in the trailer, pulling into the lot is still mandatory.
For how these checkpoints line up against the country's main highways, our map of Georgia with regions and roads is worth a look.
β±οΈ How the electronic queue works and what it costs
The setup is the same across all nine checkpoints. You pull into the TIR park, your truck gets registered in the electronic system, and then you wait for the system to call you forward to customs. There's no "live" line at a barrier, and trying to skip it doesn't work.

On cost. According to data Transparency International Georgia published in June 2026, the service runs 80 GEL per trailer. An important caveat from the same source: under the rules, that fee covers queue management only, no other services are included in the price. And without payment, the truck isn't let through to the border.
The practical takeaway: showers, food, parking beyond the required period, repairs, all of that is billed separately, and prices vary from lot to lot. Confirm them on site rather than assuming everything's bundled in.
Official rules and details on the queue system are published by Georgia's Revenue Service, in the TIR parks section at rs.ge.
ποΈ The TIR park in Kazbegi before Upper Lars
The busiest and least predictable crossing, since this is the main road link between Russia and the South Caucasus.
Lots here sit on the Georgian Military Highway, near the Dariali checkpoint. Our directory lists the TIR park at the Dariali checkpoint and the lot near the Dariali tunnel.

The main bottleneck here isn't the Georgian side. In spring 2026, the Transport Corridor Research Center, TCRC, reported that after leaving the holding area in Kazbegi, drivers spend 7-8 hours reaching the Russian border post, then face a long wait for paperwork, and registration after inspection can take another 7-8 hours. By the same account, some drivers in that situation hand their documents to intermediaries who charge unofficial fees. We're passing this on as a research organisation's finding: such payments are unofficial, and relying on them isn't advisable.
Weather. The Georgian Military Highway and the approach to the Dariali Gorge close during heavy snowfall, avalanche risk, and ice. Once the road reopens, a backlog of trucks forms a queue that can last hours. Build slack into your schedule in winter, and keep food, water, and warm clothing in the cab.
Service. A Tegeta Motors branch, a large parts and repair chain, operates right on the grounds of one of the Kazbegi TIR parks. If something breaks en route, it's one of the few places in the mountains where you can sort it out without driving down to Tbilisi.
π The TIR park at Red Bridge

Red Bridge is the main crossing into Azerbaijan and the route east, toward the Caspian and Central Asia. The checkpoint sits in Gardabani municipality, and the lots in front of it fall under the same area.
Our directory lists TIR parks in Gardabani, including the Red Bridge TIR park. Lots for the crossings toward Armenia and Javakheti are listed under the relevant city sections, for example TIR parks in Akhalkalaki.
π The TIR park at Sarpi on the Turkish border

Sarpi is Georgia's main gateway into Turkey, right on the Black Sea coast south of Batumi. Traffic here is heavy with Turkish and transit vehicles, and this is the checkpoint Turkish drivers search for most often.
Lots ahead of Sarpi are listed under TIR parks in Batumi, including, for instance, parking on the Turkey-bound route.
If you're driving from central Georgia, build in extra time for the trip to Batumi: the east-west highway is under reconstruction, and sections through the Rikoti Pass can slow you down.
π§ What kind of service is actually at these lots

The key thing to understand is the difference between what's mandatory and what's just convenient.
The mandatory fee covers a spot in the electronic queue, nothing more. Everything else depends entirely on the specific lot: some have a cafΓ©, showers, a guarded area and a shop, others have little beyond asphalt and the queue itself. It's worth checking reviews and amenities ahead of time, especially if you're facing a long wait.
Addresses, services, and driver reviews across the country are in our directory, starting with TIR parks in and around Tbilisi.
Before heading toward Kazbegi, check whether the Georgian Military Highway is actually open. It closes for weather in winter without much advance warning, and finding that out back in Tbilisi beats discovering it on the switchbacks below Gudauri, where there's nowhere left to turn around.
And keep a day's worth of supplies in the cab. Water, food, warm clothing, a charged phone, cash in lari. Waits of fifteen hours or more toward Upper Lars aren't unusual, and a shop near the lot isn't guaranteed.
Waited at a TIR park in Georgia? Leave a review on Madloba: which lot, what you paid, how long you waited, and what was actually there. For a driver coming through next, a fresh review of a specific lot beats any general rule.
Information is current as of September 2026. Rules for parking freight vehicles at customs checkpoints are set by Government Resolution No. 442 and published by the Revenue Service at rs.ge. Service pricing is per Transparency International Georgia data from June 2026; Upper Lars wait times per TCRC data from May 2026. Conditions, prices, and hours at specific lots change, so confirm them on site.
