The house museum is devoted to Korneli Kekelidze, a philologist and scholar of old Georgian letters whose name the national centre of manuscripts carries. The house shows the setting he grew up in, family belongings, books and material about his work. The collection is rural and intimate, and locals tell the story.

The house stands in Tobanieri, a village in the Vani municipality, among the hills and orchards of western Imereti. Around it are ordinary village buildings, stone walls and vineyards. Vani with its archaeological museum is the nearest town.

The house is small and half an hour is enough. The first half of the day is the easier time to come, and it is better to arrange the visit through the village in advance. Combine the trip with Vani and a wider Imereti route.

Tips

  • Combine the visit with the archaeological museum in Vani, not far away
  • Ask about the books and manuscripts, that is the theme of this house
  • Check the way in the village, signposts may be missing

How to get there

  • From Vani along the local road towards Tobanieri, about twenty minutes by car
  • Roughly an hour from Kutaisi via Samtredia and Vani
