The church in Sviri is the working church of a village above the Potskhovi valley, north-east of Akhaltsikhe. The village bears the same name as the well-known wine village of Sviri in Imereti, and before you is precisely the Samtskhe namesake: no wine cellars, but a church of its own and views over the valley.
Sviri conveniently closes the small Akhaltsikhe circle: Ivlita, Skhvilisi and the Potskhovi valley in one unhurried trip. The road here runs up the valley, and with every kilometre the Akhaltsikhe side opens wider: fields, slopes and the Rabati fortress in the distance.
One enters freely, with the usual courtesy of a working church: modest dress, a quiet voice, respect for a service if one is under way. The visit with a walk around the village takes half an hour.
