A village church known locally not by a dedication but by an extra word in its name: tekenebi. Whether that is a family name or an old local nickname cannot be said, as no explanation has survived. This is ordinary in Georgian villages: a church is called whatever the neighbours call it.

Tnusi lies in eastern Kvemo Kartli, east of Dmanisi, on a slope. The village is small yet holds two churches, standing at opposite ends about four hundred metres apart. The second is known by the word shveli. Two working churches for one small community are a rarity in these hills. The century of building is unknown.

The parish keeps to its own circle and outsiders are few. Dress modestly and women wear a headscarf; if the church is locked, it is customary to ask neighbours for the key rather than look for a way in.
