The Virgin Mary church stands in the same Shavsakdrebi complex, barely twenty metres from the church of John the Baptist. Such a density of buildings suggests this was not a parish but a monastic or estate ensemble.
Gomareti lies in the mountainous part of Dmanisi Municipality, on a high open plateau. The nearest marked site outside the complex, the church ruins of Revazasheni nasoplari, is about three kilometres away. The roads here run along the ridges and drift over in winter.
Keep a restrained manner: for nearby villages this is a working place of prayer. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
