The church is dedicated to the prophet Elijah. In Sakire it is the third village shrine: the Red church, named after the colour of its stone, and the church of St George stand here as well.
The village lies north-east of Dmanisi, in hilly country between river valleys. Three churches for one village is a lot for these parts, and they show that Sakire was once well populated.
There are no regular services here and the church can be seen from the outside at any time. The village is alive, and getting inside is arranged with the neighbours.
