Kvemo Kartli is a region where Islam is not a guest but part of the permanent fabric: large Azerbaijani communities live in the Gardabani and Marneuli districts, and a mosque in a village here is as ordinary as a church in a Kakhetian one.
Meore Kesalo translates as Second Kesalo, which means a first one stands nearby: an ordinal prefix in Georgian toponymy almost always implies a pair. The village lies on the plain south of Rustavi, and the mosque remains its centre of meaning.
The rules here are the usual ones for a mosque: shoes are removed at the entrance, clothing should be covering with shoulders and knees hidden, and women need a headscarf. Sightseeing during prayer is out of place, and photography inside is best agreed first. You can walk up to the mosque at any time of day.
