The chapel dedicated to Saint George stands near Gantiadi, beyond the built-up area. A chapel differs from a church in size and in having no sanctuary: no liturgy is served here, and people come to pray and light a candle.
Gantiadi belongs to Tsalka Municipality, which lies on a high plateau between the Trialeti range and the Khrami valley. These lands were historically settled by Greeks and Armenians, and some villages changed their make up after the resettlements of the twentieth century. Winter here is long and snow lies on the plateau for months.
A headscarf is useful for women, as it may be required at the entrance. The site remains part of the everyday life of the area, and that deserves respect.
Tips
- Allow no more than half an hour for the visit.
- Bring water, as there are no kiosks nearby.
- It is better to leave a dog outside.
Getting there
- Navigate by the coordinates, as there may be no signs on the approach.
- Ask locals for directions, since the short way is not always obvious.
