The church of the Virgin Mary stands in Zemo Machkhaani in Dedoplistskaro Municipality. The hall is very small and exactly square, a little over three metres on each side, with a semicircular apse adjoining it on the east.
The walls are set in cobble while all the structural elements are laid in square brick: single bricks are inserted into the lower parts of the outer corners and the upper walls are built entirely of brick. The entrance is on the west, with a rounded opening set into a slightly recessed niche. The tall apse window has a rounded arch inside and a straight lintel outside, a window of the same kind is made in the west wall above the entrance, and niches are placed on either side of the sanctuary window and of the door.
The hall is covered by a vault running the full height and carried on a single hanging arch. Outside the walls are plastered, and above the entrance on the west facade a cross on a stepped base is formed by recessed brickwork with a window cut beneath it. A four stepped gable finishes the facades, built of alternating courses of brick laid straight and at an angle. Sources assign the church to the late Middle Ages.
