A male monastic house dedicated to the Archangels, that is Michael and Gabriel together. The dedication is among the commonest in Georgia, and the house keeps its own order of the day, different from a parish one.
Gelati is not a single building but a whole district north-east of Kutaisi, and it holds several religious buildings. This house stands about half a kilometre from the famous monastic complex founded by David the Builder and inscribed on the World Heritage list, but is not part of it. Higher up the slope is another holy place, a church of the Iveron Icon. The century of foundation is not established.
The house is in use: covering clothing, a headscarf and skirt for women, voices kept low. The first half of the day is the better time to come, when there are fewer people about.
