The third and last Shemokmedi site in this survey. As with the two Gorisferdi buildings, one thing should be said at once: this is a separate village church, not the monastic complex for which Shemokmedi is known across the country.

Three Christian buildings within one village, with the famous monastery standing nearby as well, make Shemokmedi one of the richest places in the Gurian part of this survey. This church stands in the southern part of the village, south-east of Ozurgeti.

You can walk up to the church at any time of day. No dating has become attached to the building. Dress soberly, women bring a headscarf, and treat the walls with care.

📍 In brief

  • A separate village church in the name of St. George
  • The southern part of Shemokmedi village south-east of Ozurgeti
  • The two churches of the Gorisferdi area stand further north

The site features old church ruins and a cemetery. Although there are no signs, the walls of the church and cemetery are easily visible from the road. There's nothing particularly remarkable here, but if you're in the area and enjoy historical sites and old architecture, it's worth a brief stop.
