A village church of the Most Holy Mother of God. The caveat comes at once: this is not that Vardzia. The famous cave city cut into the rock under Queen Tamar lies in Samtskhe Javakheti in the south of the country, more than two hundred kilometres from here.
This is a different place: the village of Vardzia in Kharagauli Municipality, in south-eastern Imereti. The toponym occurs more than once in Georgia, but no one draws a connection between the two places. The church is prominent in the district: people come here from beyond the village. The century of building is not established.
The parish is active and services follow the church year. Dress modestly, women wear a headscarf. If you were looking for the cave city, you need an entirely different place at the other end of the country.
