The church of Saint George stands in Kareli itself, the district centre of Shida Kartli on the left bank of the Mtkvari. This is a town parish church: its life follows the times of services rather than visiting hours, and it is townspeople who come here first of all.
Kareli is small and stretched along the Tbilisi to Kutaisi road, which makes the church a visible landmark a few minutes on foot from the central streets. For anyone driving through Shida Kartli it is a convenient halt midway between the capital and western Georgia. Around the town lies a scattering of village churches: Dirbi with its parish church and convent, Breti with an active community, Takhtisdziri and Dvani to the north.
