The Kvevri Museum is devoted to the clay vessel on which Georgian winemaking rests. It shows how a qvevri is shaped, fired, buried in the ground and maintained, along with the tools without which the method does not work. The subject is narrow, but it explains why Georgian wine is made differently from the rest of Europe.
The museum stands in Kachreti, a village in the Gurjaani municipality, in the vineyard part of Kakheti. Around it are cellars, vineyards and a resort area with springs. Gurjaani and Sagarejo are both less than half an hour away.
The museum is open daily from ten in the morning until six in the evening. Half an hour to an hour is enough. Combine the trip with a tasting in one of the neighbouring cellars, that way the subject comes together.
Tips
- Combine the visit with a tasting in a neighbouring cellar
- Ask how a cracked qvevri is repaired, a story of its own
- Come in autumn, the village is at work during the harvest
How to get there
- From Gurjaani along the local road, about twenty minutes by car
- Roughly two hours from Tbilisi via Sagarejo and Badiauri
