The church is dedicated to the prophet Elijah. Two addresses should be separated at once: the famous Ikalto academy at the monastery, which draws visitors for the history of Georgia, stands in the same village but is an entirely different place. This church is small and rural, and has nothing to do with the monastery.
Ikalto lies in the foothills west of Telavi, among vineyards, and is also known for pottery. The church stands at the western edge of the village, away from the monastery and from the centre. Further east, closer to the centre, two more churches stand, a Virgin Mary one and a Saint George one, barely seventy metres apart.
There are no regular services here and the church is usually locked, but the yard is open. If you have come to Ikalto for the academy, it is worth allowing half an hour for the village churches: they show what an ordinary Kakhetian parish looks like beside a great monastery.
