Telavi: The Legendary Plane Tree and Batonis-Cikhe
Telavi is considered one of the most ancient cities in Georgia. It is located in Kakheti, in the Alazani Valley. Some sources claim that Telavi was founded in the 1st or 2nd century AD. However, officially recognized sources date the city's history to the 8th century.
The first fortress in these parts was built during this time. According to one legend, the city of Telavi owes its existence to... the Armenians. Supposedly, in ancient times, Armenian guides fleeing the Turks and Mongols came to the Georgian king and asked him to allow them to settle in the Georgian kingdom. The king, not having any objections, sent envoys to choose a site for the settlement.
They wandered for quite a while and eventually found themselves in the Alazani Valley. Struck by the natural beauty of the surrounding area, one of the Armenians couldn't help but exclaim, "It's nice here!" which in Armenian is pronounced "te lav." Thus, Telavi was born some time later.

The surrounding area and territory of Telavi boast numerous landmarks and cultural and historical monuments with a rich past.
The unique Telavi Kremlin, the Batonis Tsikhe Fortress, was built in the 17th century to address unrest. Its name translates from Georgian as "lord's fortress."
The Telavi sycamore is a local artifact. It stands approximately 40 meters tall and has a trunk circumference of over 12 meters. Its exact age is unknown, but locals claim it's around 900. When visiting this place in groups, tourists hold hands and try to embrace the tree trunk, hoping their wishes will come true.
The Telavi market deserves special mention. Tourists who have visited it note the quality of the goods, a good selection, and reasonable prices.
