🧭 Who This Article Is For
This guide is for anyone wanting to see Kutaisi from above rather than just at street level, as well as those deciding whether a trip to Okatse Canyon is worth it for a single observation deck. It will also come in handy if you're looking for the perfect sunset spot on your last evening in town.
📜 City views and views outside the city
Three of the four points in this selection are located within the city limits of Kutaisi: from them, you can see the Bagrati Cathedral, the Rioni River, and the rooftops of the Old Town.
The fourth, a cantilevered platform above the Okatse Canyon, is not physically located in the vicinity of Kutaisi, but rather a separate natural attraction 40-50 km from the city, which local tour operators still sell as a day trip from Kutaisi.
It's important to understand the difference: the city's observation points are a matter of half an hour, while the Okatse Canyon takes half or a full day.
🏙️ Within the city limits
There are three points, each of which can be reached on foot or in a few minutes by car from the center.
⛪ Observation deck at the Mtsvane Kvavila temple
📍 Hill on the left bank of the Rioni, Kutaisi
⛪ Complex: three churches (1117, 17th century, 1914), a tower, and a pantheon
🕐 Best time: sunset

"Mtsvane Kvavila" translates from Georgian as "green flower," and it's not just a viewing platform, but an entire historical and architectural complex on a hill, dating back to the 12th century. It includes three churches from different eras, the oldest dating back to 1117, a defensive tower, and a pantheon where famous Kutaisi residents are buried: composer Meliton Balanchivadze, artist Valerian Mizandari, and one of the first Georgian documentary filmmakers, Vasily Amashukeli.
The hill offers panoramic views of the Bagrati Cathedral and the entire historic center of the city. In the evening, closer to sunset, the lighting makes this one of the best spots for photographs of Kutaisi. Entry to the grounds is free, but the complex gates may be closed after 6:00 PM. This should be taken into account if you plan to visit for sunset.
🌳 Observation deck in the Youth Park
📍 Youth Park, Kutaisi

The observation deck is located within the Youth Park, which already has a dedicated article on our blog and was also mentioned in the general hub about Kutaisi parks.
Unlike Mtsvane Kvavila, this is more of a stopover during a stroll through the park than a destination in its own right, but the views of the river and the city from here are worth a few minutes' lingering.
🌉 Observation deck near the Red Bridge
📍 Near the Red Bridge, the historic center of Kutaisi

The viewpoint is located next to the Red Bridge, the first metal bridge in the Caucasus, which we've already covered in detail in our Kutaisi bridge hub.
The observation deck here isn't really a separate structure, but rather a logical continuation of the walk along the embankment: the view of the Rioni River and the old houses on the banks complements the bridge itself, rather than competing with it.
🏔️ Outside the city
🏔️ Viewpoint in Okatse Canyon
📍 Khoni municipality, about 40-50 km from Kutaisi
📏 Height: about 140 meters above the river
🪜 Route: about 544 steps and a suspended trail nearly 1 km long
💰 Admission: entry fee required (nature reserve area)

This is the most spectacular and at the same time the most physically demanding point of the collection: a cantilevered observation deck juts out directly above the canyon at an altitude of approximately 140 meters above the Okatse River.
To reach it, one must climb a suspended path nearly a kilometer long and approximately 544 steps. The platform itself hangs over the abyss so noticeably that some visitors experience sheer height anxiety.
It's worth being honest: if you're afraid of heights, it might be better to mentally prepare yourself in advance or avoid the hike to the very edge.
The Okatse Canyon is located in the Khoni Municipality, 40-50 km from Kutaisi, and the route itself passes through a protected natural area with an entrance fee.
The views from the platform of the deep limestone gorge and the river below are considered some of the most spectacular in the region, so if you've already seen Kutaisi's city viewpoints and are willing to spend a day on the drive and climb, it's worth it.
If you have a day in the city rather than outside it: combine the Red Bridge, Youth Park, and Mtsvane Kvavila into a single evening walk. All three locations form a logical route along the embankment, finishing at sunset by the pantheon. Plan Okatse separately—ideally on a day when you are in no hurry to go anywhere else.
🏁 Why look for Kutaisi's observation decks
Three city spots offer a variety of views of Kutaisi, from the historic Mtsvane Kvavila hill to the embankment near the Red Bridge. The Okatse Canyon adds a completely different dimension to the experience for those willing to dedicate a day to it. Together, they cover the entire spectrum: from a quick evening stroll to a full-fledged trip into the Georgian countryside.

❓ Frequently asked questions
💬 Four: three within Kutaisi (Mtsvane Kvavila, Youth Park, Red Bridge) and one outside the city, in the Okatse Canyon.
💬 Technically, no; it's a separate natural landmark 40-50 km from the city in the Khoni Municipality. But people usually go there from Kutaisi as a day trip, so we included it in this list.
💬 The Mtsvane Kvavila Cathedral offers panoramic views of the Bagrati Cathedral and the city center. Please note that the gates to the complex may be closed after 6:00 PM.
💬 You'll have to climb about 544 steps and a nearly kilometer-long suspended trail. The platform itself hangs over a precipice at a height of about 140 meters, which may be challenging for those with a fear of heights.
💬 The three city points can easily be combined in one evening, but due to the distance and climbing time, it's best to plan a separate day for the Okatse Canyon.
