Avlevi: a 15th-Century Fortress in Orbeti

Every local will confidently say that Georgia's most beautiful places are located in non-tourist areas. This is Avlevi, a place not particularly popular with tourists, but truly worth a visit. Avlevi Fortress is an ancient structure built in the 15th-16th centuries.

The fortress is located in the Kvemo Kartli region, Tetritskaro municipality, in the village of Orbeti, on the left bank of the Algetia, the largest river in the Kvemo Kartli region, at an altitude of 1,090 meters above sea level. Avlevi was built of stone and mortar. The fortress was divided into four floors by flat wooden ceilings.

Lapidary script and embrasures can be seen on the building's walls. Note the fortress's intricate oval windows; they are particularly intriguing to lovers of unusual architectural designs.
