📜 How the Monastery Complex Was Built
The year 2002 marked the beginning. The monastery complex was founded on Mount Makhati, on the eastern outskirts of Tbilisi. The first buildings appeared quickly: by 2006, three churches were completed — St. John, Ekvtime, and George of Mtatsminda.
Following this, the "Iveria" Foundation was established specifically to collect donations for the construction of the main cathedral. Participation was completely voluntary. There was no state funding, nor any major corporate sponsors — only the parishioners.
April 2012 — the laying of the foundation stone of the main cathedral. The ceremony was attended by Patriarch Ilia II and President Mikheil Saakashvili, alongside other prominent Georgian figures. For people who understand the Georgian context, this event in itself is a historic milestone.
The construction lasted exactly three years. In 2015, the cathedral was completed.
The year 2016 — municipal authorities paved a road to the complex as part of the Sameba–Makhati highway. Before that, reaching it was more difficult.
