Gori: the Heart of Eastern Georgia

Gori, one of the oldest settlements in modern-day Georgia and one of the largest cities, is the capital of the Shida Kartli region. Historical monuments located in and around Gori will impress even the most discerning travelers and tourists.

The first documented mentions of settlements in Gori date back to the 7th century AD. According to various archaeological studies, the first urban settlements appeared in Gori in the 1st century BC.

The Ancient Cave City of Uplistsikhe

One of the oldest settlements in the Caucasus region, the cave city of Uplistsikhe, is located 10 kilometers from Gori. The settlement was founded in the late 2nd century BC. Of the 700 caves and various structures that once existed in Uplistsikhe, only about 150 remain. 

Uplistsikhe is currently listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most significant monuments of Georgian culture. Throughout its long history, Gori has been the center of military conflicts on numerous occasions.

One of the ancient city's most important landmarks is the Goristsikhe Fortress, whose construction dates back to the 13th century. During the Gori earthquake of February 1920, most of the buildings were destroyed. Some historical monuments were also damaged.

Among the modern monuments and museums that emerged in the post-Soviet era, the Stalin Museum is worth mentioning. In addition, Gori boasts a whole host of sites dedicated to the Generalissimo's name, including a park, an avenue, and a square named after Stalin.

Memorial to the Defenders of the Goristsikhe Fortress

Not far from the ancient Goristsikhe Fortress stands a memorial dedicated to the strength and courage of Georgian soldiers. This intriguing composition symbolizes the tragic events of 2008, associated with the military conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Brave knights in armor and weapons are ready to fight for their beloved Georgia at any time.

Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary

A beautiful view of the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Church of St. John the Baptist opens from the top of a hill in the center of Gori. The church was built in the 18th century. During the Soviet era, the building was used as a warehouse and a music school, and numerous religious valuables were removed. Today, it is a functioning Orthodox church, attracting pilgrims from all over the world.
