Mravaltskaro Colourful Mountains are one of the few places in Georgia where nature paints in horizontal stripes. Orange, red, white and grey layers of sedimentary rock run across the hillsides like bands on a geological timeline — a record of everything that happened here over millions of years.
The site is often called Georgia's rainbow mountains or Georgia's Mars. But the real story is more interesting than Mars: where these semi-desert hills now stand, there was once a genuine sea.
🌍 Where the Colours Come From: Sea, Sand and Millions of Years
The Gareja desert is one of the few places in Georgia where the ground surface reads like a geological textbook. Different colours come from different rock layers, each deposited in its own era:
Yellow bands — sandstone. Compressed layers of marine and river sand.
Brown, red and grey bands — clay. Different shades depending on iron content and mineral composition.
White bands — marine salt. This is the most unexpected fact: the Gareja desert was once the floor of an ancient sea. Salt deposits left behind by that prehistoric ocean are still preserved in the hillsides today, giving the brightest, almost porcelain-white colour to the stripes.
Clay hills with steep slopes, dry ravines and terraces follow one after another in a landscape unlike anything else in Georgia. In several spots the coloured strata emerge right on the ground surface, not just on the hillsides.
📸 How to Find the Best Viewpoint
The most photogenic spot is near the Mravaltskaro Reservoir. Both the lake itself and the striped hills surrounding it are worth seeing.
Most visitors park at the reservoir, look at the water and leave disappointed — the striped hills are almost invisible from the shoreline. Leave your car and walk around the nearest hill to the right along a narrow path. That takes 5–7 minutes. After turning the corner, the full view opens: vivid bands of colour running the entire length of the slope.
The best light is early morning and the hour before sunset, when low-angle rays emphasise the relief and sharpen the contrast between the layers. On overcast days the colours look washed out. In spring, sparse green vegetation appears on the hills and adds a striking contrast against the red and white strata.

About 50 km from Tbilisi. The route runs through Gardabani toward the Gareja desert. The road is unpaved but in reasonable condition — a standard car gets through without difficulty in dry weather. In the rainy season (November–March) some sections can be slippery; a 4x4 is more reliable.
