Lake Ritsa: Deep Waters, Pine Forests and Mountain Views
The uniqueness of Lake Ritsa is that it is the deepest lake in Georgia: the water in the lake is very fresh (64 mg/l) and never freezes. In spring, the water in the lake has a greenish tint, in winter it is bluish — blue. The clear water of the lake reflects the surrounding huge peaks (2200-3500 meters high), covered with dense forests. Various types of coniferous trees grow around.

There are many legends about Lake Ritsa. According to one of them, the mountain of Pshegishkha collapsed and turned into water after the curses of a widow. The second legend tells about the most beautiful girl of the Ritz. When she was abducted by bandits, Ritsa's brother threw a huge shield at them. The shield fell into the Lashipsa River and dammed it, and river water spilled over the valley and flooded the surrounding area. The reason for the damming of the river, as scientists suggest, was a rock that collapsed from the southeastern slopes of the Gagrin range during the earthquake.
Lake Ritsa is located at an altitude of 884 meters above sea level. The mirror area of the lake is 1.49 km, the maximum depth is 101 m. 6 rivers flow into the Ritsa, the largest of which is the Lashipse. The Bashara River (a left tributary of the Gega River) flows out of the lake, which flows along the southern slope of the Abkhazian Caucasian Ridge. The length of the river is 11 kilometers. A highway runs through the deep Yupshar Canyon leading to the lake and the surrounding area. The Ricin Nature Reserve (16,289 m) was founded there.
