The uniqueness of the museum lies not only in its exhibits, but also in the building itself. It is located in a former mosque built more than 200 years ago. Old ornamental paintings, carved wooden elements and a fireplace from 1833 turn the building itself into a historical exhibit.

How did the museum come about and who created it?
From idea to implementation
The Machakhela Museum opened on June 9, 1984, thanks to the enthusiasm of local resident Zurab Nagervadze. He collected exhibits to preserve the cultural heritage of the region.
After his death in 1995, the museum was taken over by his son Malkhaz Nagervadze, who continued his father's work.
In 2007, the museum became part of the Khelvachauri Cultural Center and received a new name - Chkhutuneti Historical and Ethnographic Museum.

What weapons were produced in Machakhela?
During the wars with the Ottoman Empire, there was a weapons production in the Machakhela Gorge.
Here, the "topi Machakhela" guns were created - some of the best at that time. They had high accuracy and reliability, which made them popular among soldiers.
