The Tbilisi funicular, a vehicle that allows you to climb Mtatsminda Mountain to the restaurant, the Pantheon and the Mtatsminda Park, was built in 1905, the official opening took place on March 27 of the same year.
It is considered an important historical and cultural landmark of the city. In 2000, a tragic accident took place on the funicular, which suspended its work for many years. There was a break in the cable, as a result of which people could die. Repairs and modernization of the funicular were completed only in 2012, the funicular was reopened on January 30, 2013. The object has again become a landmark of Tbilisi.
The funicular operates daily, throughout the year from 10:30 to 23:15, after 19:00 the wagons do not stop at the middle station. The tram covers a distance of 501 m in 5 minutes. The angle of inclination is from 28 to 33 °. Wagons: during the operation of the funicular in two directions (up the mountain and down the mountain), 2 wagons made in Austria run along the rope. The cars have large panoramic windows, the roof is also glass. Comfortable salons are divided into 3 sections, everything is provided for maximum viewing. Today, the funicular is not only entertainment for tourists, but also the most convenient way to the mountain.
