Deep in the rocky cliffs of Samtskhe-Javakheti, in the municipality of Akhaltsikhe, the mysterious Bayebi complex lurks. Created by masters of the 12th-13th centuries, this architectural ensemble includes a fence, two inconspicuously standing churches, a cave with a sanctuary and a tunnel. Rock-cut structures, long a characteristic feature of Georgian architecture, take on a special touch of mystery and antiquity in Bayebi.
Although Bayebi does not compete in size with large-scale complexes such as Uplistsikhe or Vardzia, its uniqueness and attractiveness lie in the amazing atmosphere of history and mystery. One of the churches looks modest and inconspicuous, while the other is striking in its height and majesty. On the outside of the churches, a cornice richly decorated with ornaments stands out, giving them a special attractiveness.
But Bayebi's real secret is revealed within its walls. Shelters are built on two levels under the churches, and mysterious passages and secret passages begin from the large sanctuary, going deep into the rock. Among the inhabitants of Meskheti, these shelters were of particular importance in harsh times when Turkish policies put pressure on this region.
We invite you to plunge into the atmosphere of antiquity and mystery, to feel the grandeur and mystery of Bayebi. This place will not only surprise you with its unique architecture, but will also give you an unforgettable experience of immersing yourself in the history and culture of Georgia.
