The Museum of Local Lore in Martvili was founded in 1957 on the initiative of the teacher Givi Eliav, who for a long time collected interesting exhibits telling residents and guests of the city about the cultural and historical heritage of his native land.
Today it is one of the most informative museums in the region with a large number of original samples in the fields of numismatics, ethnography, geology and archaeology. The exhibition fund keeps exhibits from the Paleolithic and Mesolithic eras, there are also famous bronze axes of the Colchian culture. The halls contain bronze ore, early iron, ceramics and clay products.
The central element of the exhibition is a collection of silver, copper, gold and Colchian coins. Two exhibitions are set aside to demonstrate the village life of Megrelia: spinning wheels, wooden utensils, tools, a plow, clothes and fabrics, furniture.
