The palace complex was built in 1837 in Zugdidi on the initiative of Prince David Dadiani, it was a luxurious royal residence. The architecture of the palace was carried out by the Russian figure Leonid Vasiliev, the mansion surprisingly combines national and imperial motifs of Georgian architecture. On the territory of the museum there is also an old church of the XVI century with a pyramidal dome.
The museum collection holds more than 52 thousand exhibits, among which there are personal belongings of the princely family, documentary materials, ethnographic and archaeological materials. The botanical garden surrounding the mansion was recognized as the best example of park and garden art at the end of the XIX century.
Ekaterina Dadiani worked on the layout of the magnificent park, she personally ordered seedlings from Europe and invited foreign masters to arrange the garden.
