The fortress of Bebristsikhe means "the fortress of the elder". It is also called Natsikhari - "castle". Bebristsikhe is located in the northern part of present-day Mtskheta.
Where the name came from is unknown, but there is a legend about Prince Simon, who had a son Mamuka and a daughter Makrina. After their death, the fortress allegedly acquired the name Bebristsikhe. The exact time of construction of the fortress is unknown. During the excavations, older walls dating back to the 1st century BC were found. But in 1156 it is mentioned in connection with the death of King Demeter I. In our time, the fortress was seriously damaged by a landslide, although the buildings of the 9th century survived. Work is underway on the reconstruction of this archaeological monument.
