The pride of the Imereti region, Modinakhe fortress, rises on top of chalk limestone, with panoramic views of the Kvirila River gorge and the Imereti Mountains. This magnificent architectural marvel, built by Papuna Tsereteli in the 1730s, is a late medieval fortress as well as an archaeological treasure.
The architectural complex of Modinaje consists of impressive two long walls, one of which is topped by a high tower, and at the other end there are two mighty towers. In the center of the space rises a house, a prayer temple and a prison, creating a unique atmosphere of historical times. It is surprising that qvevri - burials where various valuables were kept - were found in the courtyard of the fortress.
