The old cable car station on Giorgi Pantsulaya Street in Chiatura is one of the most iconic places in the city, rich in history and engineering significance. Before the 2021 renovation, the cable car was a network of 10 passenger lines and 2 manganese lines, which was an important part of the industrial infrastructure of the Soviet period. Some stations were decorated with murals depicting Soviet heroes, which adds cultural and historical significance to the site.
Due to active use over decades, the dilapidated equipment no longer meets modern safety and comfort requirements, so in 2016 the operation of the passenger cable car was suspended. However, in September 2021, the French company Poma completed a major overhaul of the cable car, ensuring it complies with modern quality and safety standards.
Today, this renovated cable car attracts both locals and tourists. Traveling on this eco-friendly public transport, passengers can enjoy breathtaking bird's eye views of the unique Georgian mining town. The station is worth visiting for those who are interested in the history of engineering, Soviet architecture and want to get an unforgettable experience from the views of Chiatura.
