A selection of the most famous monuments in Tbilisi

The capital of Georgia is rich in sights. In it you will find solace for any of your travel needs. If you prefer walking or car sightseeing tours in Tbilisi, then you definitely need to take a glimpse at the monuments located on the picturesque streets of the city.

Today we want to tell you about the most famous urban sculptures and monuments of Tbilisi.

    Monument of Freedom

    Freedom Square in Tbilisi

It is part of the architectural ensemble of Freedom Square. The sculpture itself is a 30-meter column with a 5-meter monument to St. George on top. It is unlikely that you will bypass this place by walking around Tbilisi. Freedom Square itself is the center where administrative and state institutions are located.

The square was formed in the middle of the 19th century. During the Soviet Union, it was completely reconstructed, and its appearance was adapted according to the tastes of contemporaries. The monument is dedicated to St. George for a reason - he is the spiritual patron of the whole of Georgia, deeply revered by the local population. The construction was led by the notorious Zurab Tsereteli.

Monument to the heroes of the film “Mimino”

Monument to the Soviet film Mimino

Walking around the Avlabari district, you can meet another work of Tsereteli, created in 2011 - a monument with images of the characters of the famous film “Mimino". Rezo Gabriadze was directly involved in writing the script for the film. This justifies the placement of the sculpture in Tbilisi, and not in Moscow, contrary to the original plan.

At the ceremonial opening of the monument, the mayor of the capital said that the monument is a symbol of friendship of peoples. We recommend visiting this attraction to all fans of this movie to see their favorite characters live.

    Monument “Mother Kartli" (“Mother Georgia")

    Mother of Kartli

In 1958, a monument was erected, which later became a universally recognized symbol of the capital. It is located in the Sololaki district. Walking on foot, it is very difficult not to notice it from anywhere in the city, since its height slightly exceeds 20 meters. Initially, the monument was made of wood, but later it was decided to replace it with an aluminum replica. Georgian sculptor Elguja Amashukeli worked on it.

The monument “Mother Kartli” has a unique plot. According to the author's idea, it symbolizes Georgian love for guests and at the same time the ability to fight back against enemies.

An interesting fact: for the entire half-century history of the monument, the headdress of the “Mother” has changed several times. The first time was after the restoration in 1963, the second time was in the 90s.

    Monument “History of Georgia”

It is located not in the capital, but slightly outside of it. To get to it, you will have to go to the Tbilisi reservoir and make a journey of 13 kilometers. The monument itself is an ensemble consisting of 16 columns with a height of 353 meters. Each column is a separate monument, on which are carved plots telling about the history of Georgia or episodes from the Bible. Also parts of the complex are the cross of St. Nino, the church and sculptures depicting the first Christian preachers on the territory of Georgia. The author of the monument is Tsereteli. It took the master more than 20 years to build it.

    The Monument to Saint Nino

    Monument to Saint Nino

The Monument to Saint Nino in Tbilisi is a majestic memorial dedicated to Saint Nino, the enlightener and preacher of Christianity in Georgia. Located in Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, on a hill above the Sololaki district, the monument is one of the city’s main attractions and a symbol of Christianity in Georgia.

Saint Nino, originally from Cappadocia, brought Christianity to Georgia in the early 4th century and converted King Mirian III and Queen Nana to the Christian faith. In her honor, many churches and monasteries were built, and one of Georgia’s most important relics bears her name—the Cross of Saint Nino.

Created in the early 21st century, the monument is a tall sculpture of Saint Nino standing on a branching pedestal. The figure is made of metal and gilded, which gives it a solemn and majestic appearance. Saint Nino is depicted with outstretched arms, holding the Cross of the Gospel, symbolizing the bringing of Christianity to the lands of Georgia. A beautiful park surrounds the monument, offering breathtaking views of the city and its surroundings.

It serves as a reminder of the important role Saint Nino played in Georgia’s history and culture, and it also symbolizes the strength of faith and the spiritual unity of the nation.
