Sukhumi
The main resort of Abkhazia Sukhumi is located on a picturesque Black Sea gulf, between the mouths of the rivers Gumista and Kelasuri.
The territory of the city has been inhabited since ancient times. One of the characters of the ancient Greek myth of the Argonauts were twin brothers from Jason's team - Castor and Polydevcus, who allegedly founded the city of Dioscuria (Greek for "city of twins"). This city really existed but was flooded by the sea about two thousand years ago. The ruins of this city were discovered in the mid-20th century within the Sukhumi water area.

In the vicinity of Dioscuria again built a city, which was called "Tskhumi" or "Tskhomi", which in ancient Georgian means a hornbeam tree. The Romans called this city "Sebastopolis" because of its strategic location, and the Turks transformed the name "Tskhumi" into "Sukhumi". This is the name that stuck with the city.
Subtropical climate of Sukhumi is caused by a variety of vegetation. Here are widespread as characteristic of the Black Sea climate deciduous trees (palm, magnolia, eucalyptus, laurel) and conifers (cypress, cedar, pine, etc.). There are also many fruit and citrus orchards and exotic plants such as thuja, Himalayan cedar and feijoa. There are plenty of rose bushes in the city's parks, and mimosa and acacia bloom here even in winter.
The main attraction of Sukhumi, Botanical Garden, was founded in 1837. Over time, more than 4,500 species of plants have gathered here. In addition to 1200 species of subtropical plantings in the garden there are 350 species of greenhouse and 50 aquatic plants. The pride of the park is the "Alley of Elephant Palms (Yubei)".
