Askana Clays
In Georgia man has been using clay since ancient times. It is mined in many places. However, the clay deposit, which was discovered in 1932 in the village of Mtispiri, is unique.
This clay, which appeared as a result of the deposition of volcanic ash in seawater 60 million years ago, is a real natural treasure. Such clay is called bentonite clay.
Before scientists became interested in this clay, the villagers used clay when washing their hair and even sold it.
In 1916, this clay, which was brought to the market for sale, was seen by geologist Alexander Tvalchrelidze. He became interested in the chemical composition of clay. However, it was possible to discover a clay deposit after 20 years. After the discovery, the clay was called "Ascanite"-om, since the village of Mtispiri was then part of the village community Ascona.
Aswan clay has unusual properties. It can be used in the pharmaceutical and textile industries, in perfumery, in the energy industry, etc.
