On the wall of Batumi State University, the mural “Sea Selfie” confidently declares itself, the authorship of which belongs to one of the first street artists of modern Georgia - Bache Khoperia, better known as Dr. Love. The work is dated 2015, and at the time of its creation it became the largest mural in the country.
In front of us is a girl submerged under water, she deftly poses for a selfie. The image may seem ordinary at first glance, but knowing the style and depth of the author’s thinking, you can grasp the subtext. Maybe Khoperia wants to show us how often we miss the beauty of the world around us, fixing our attention exclusively on ourselves. This mural becomes a mirror in which everyone can see their priorities and values.
Bacha Khoperia, who started with illegal graffiti, is now recognized as one of the most respected street artists in Georgia. His works, commenting on social issues and referencing popular culture, can be found throughout the world. But it is worth noting that in 2023 this mural was covered with a new image dedicated to Khvichi Kvaratskhelia, a player of the Georgian national team and the Italian Napoli.
