The Archaeological Museum “Gonio-Apsaros” is an open historical museum, which is the Gonio Fortress, one of the most ancient fortresses in the whole of Georgia.
The estimated time of its construction dates back to the 1st century. Previously, there was a Roman Empire on this territory, and this fortress served as a border base.
Archaeological excavations continue here to this day. A lot of interesting artifacts were found, some of which are now in the Batumi Archaeological Museum, and the other part are exhibits of the fortress.
Also in the fortress was discovered the grave of Matthew (one of the apostles of Jesus Christ). The fortress is perfectly preserved: only 4 of the 22 two towers collapsed.
