Selim Pasha Khimshiashvili, born in 1755, was a prominent Georgian nobleman and ruler of Upper Adjara. While under the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire, he ruled with great autonomy. The power of Selim Pasha in the Pashalik of Akhaltsikhe and his ambitions led to a confrontation with the Ottoman Sultan, which ended in his death. Despite this, today he is remembered as a hero in Adjara.
His hometown of Nigazeuli is proud of the Selim Museum, and his memory day, Selimoba, is celebrated annually in June. In Batumi, the capital of Adjara, one of the central streets is named after Selim Khimshiashvili. And in 2015, a majestic statue in his honor was erected on this street to remind of his legacy and contribution to the history of the region.
