Not far from the Black Sea coast, near the walls of the Batumi Naval School, a memorial was erected in honor of captain Anatoly Kacharav. The memorial wall, made in the shape of a semicircle, is decorated with a bust of the captain on a pedestal. Directly in front of the bust is his grave, which resembles a flowerbed - colorful flowers bloom, and thujas are planted around it.
Anatoly Kacharava became a hero when his icebreaking steamer Alexander Sibiryakov fought the German cruiser Admiral Scheer in 1942. The steamer was sunk, but, as the story goes, it did not lower its flag to the enemy. Kacharava showed exceptional courage, leading the battle to the last. After the war, he continued to serve at sea and did not limit himself to this - for many years he headed the Georgian Shipping Company. In 1982, the captain passed away, and his grave has become a place of pilgrimage for many who honor the memory of the heroes of the war.
