Fact #1. The famous Batumi Boulevard has existed for more than 300 years. The project to create this unique urban area began in 1881 under the leadership of Prussian landscape architects Roesler and Reyer.
Fact #2. In 1885, the boulevard entered a new era of its formation. The magnificent French nobleman and head gardener of the city, Michael D'alfons, brought European trends and the French style of landscape design to the development of the boulevard. In the historical annals, he is immortalized as the "good genius of the Batumi embankment", which emphasizes his invaluable contribution.
Fact #3. Batumi Boulevard is proud of its natural diversity and wealth. In his heart, in the zoo corner, there are over 140 different animals. And the total number of trees and plants covering its expanses exceeds 40,000 specimens.
Fact #4. A special trace in the history of Batumi Boulevard was left by a brilliant graduate of the Versailles National Agricultural Institute, landscape designer Jason Gordeziani. Under his leadership, a large-scale renovation of the flora of the boulevard was carried out; thanks to his talent, the former nurseries were improved, as well as new ones were added.
Fact #5. Before the onset of 1941, the alleys of the boulevard were decorated with exquisite marble statues in the antique style, delivered from the famous Italy. However, in the era of Soviet rule, marble was declared a luxury item that did not correspond to the socialist spirit. As a result, these works of art were removed from sight, transported to the warehouse of the House of Officers, after which their fate remained unknown.
Fact No. 6. The Batumi Lighthouse, in addition to its direct purpose, is a living symbol of the cultural history of the region. Its first building appeared in 1863, dating back to the period before the foundation of the boulevard itself. This monument of engineering art of that time occupies a unique geographical position, where the 41st parallel of longitude and latitude intersect, creating a special geodetic point.
Fact #7. Since the founding of Batumi Boulevard in 1881, the idea of decorating its famous alleys has matured. In 1884, the first alley was conceived along Ninoshvili Avenue, which later became known as Magnolia Alley due to the magnificent variety of evergreens.
Fact No. 8. Batumi is famous for its mosaic masterpieces, and one of the brightest examples is the cafe "Fantasia". This amazing architectural object, built in 1981 by the artist Zurab Kapanadze, has become a real business card of the city. In 2019, after a thorough restoration, the "octopus", so affectionately called by residents, returned to the boulevard in its original splendor.
Fact No. 9. By 2009, Batumi Boulevard had expanded its borders, reaching a length of 7 kilometers. The unique 1200-meter-long plot, designed by the Spanish master Alberto Domingo Cabo, demonstrates the highest class of modern landscape design and architectural art.
Fact #10. Exquisite colonnades in antique style, towering in the heart of the boulevard, have long become its symbol. The idea of creating this masterpiece belongs to Ivan Mchedlidze, a doctor from Batumi. With the idea of building colonnades, he returned from Sorrento in 1930, thanks to the support of Maxim Gorky. The boulevard's logo proudly adorns the top of this colonnade.
