The Church of St. George Khvilishi (7th century) in Aspindza is one of the most significant religious and historical attractions of Georgia. It belongs to the Georgian Orthodox Church and dates back to the 7th-8th centuries. The temple is located in the north of Sharagzy, not far from the road leading from Aspindzia to Vardzia, and is located today on the banks of Aspindzia.
The church was erected on a specially constructed two-level plinth, built from well-polished sandstone and rectangular basalt stones. The external dimensions of the building are 13.6 X 15.3 m. The temple has two entrances - from the west and south. The church hall plan is on the eastern side of the building with "raised" storerooms to the north and south. In the interior, the longitudinal walls of the temple are divided into three sections by two pairs of two-tier pilasters.
The Church of St. George Khvilishi is an important religious center for local residents and pilgrims. A visit to the temple will allow you to better understand the historical and cultural heritage of the region, as well as enjoy the unique architecture of the Georgian church building.
